There have to be a half dozen markets for unique class sizes of vehicles that have less than 100k in total sales and the auto makers are clamoring over one another to try and make a better mouse trap (large cars like the Avalon/Azera/Taurus or sub compacts like the Fiesta, Rio, Accent, Aveo).

Why aren't they doing it in this market where the top two sellers are over 100,000 a year in sales and the margins higher than in other markets? They'd also benefit from lower CAFE numbers. I am just astonished that this market segment has sat for so long unchanged. This is strictly a US phenomenon.
It is a US phenomenon because the US is the only place you can get a full size pickup. In the rest of the world the Rangers of the world are all you can get.

Look at the sales numbers. Full size truck sales continue to increase or stay the same while small truck segment contracts immensely.

You will never convince me that Ford, Toyota, etc are going to turn down the massive profits you believe are there for the small truck market.

Toyota isn't making any money on the Tundra, trying hard but not even close. They are selling more Tacoma's right now.

I do honestly think if they made an effort there is an underserved market out there. Not nearly as big as the full size market but still a good sized one.

As a two Hyundai family I really like your idea. I am eating my words from the 90's when I said I would never buy a Hyundai.

they do seem to have some medium duty expertise. I'd really like to see them give it a go. They have proven to be gutsy with the Genesis and Equus.

Sad truth is the days of the simple plane jane truck in the USA is over. Between the EPA regs. . safty regs. and the SISSY professional reviews at Edmunds,Car and Driver and so on. They trash any truck that doesn't ride like a car ,have power windows/locks leather seats and do 0 -60 in 8 sec. or less... So the manufacturers have to build to make the SISSY reviewers happy!!!

The new 2012 Tacoma is supposed to have the new engine type of engine, or the same, as the 4 runner is using, end it will bring the Tacoma to 20-22 mpg range.
