This is another good article, this time from "The Car Connection" regarding the end of the small pickup. Good information here...

So the 2011 f150 v6 has been rated at 16 and 23? Orkin and Terminix do buy a bunch of Rangers although Terminix is shifting to F150's . I saw the invoice on one not to long ago and they are paying around 12,000.00 for a long bed 4x2 auto ,air and radio only.

No way they are getting them for $12,000. I bet you'd get a heck of a deal if you order as mnay as Orkin and Terminix, though.

I worked for them both for 11 1/2 years each and honestly I think they are both mob owned. Especially Orkin, they buy nothing outside the family circle, every member of the Rollins family owns a supply company for everything they use and at a higher price than it could be bought elsewhere, except the trucks. It was about 12,000.00 for a f150 and 8,000.00 for a new Ranger. They normally buy 250 at a time.

No 4X4 available except in crew cab versions. I just priced a 4x4 crewcab with V6 that can haul what I need to haul, and with factory rebates it ran around 24K without a lot of accessories. By the way the advertised mileage is around 17mpg, does that suck or what!

ummm....... I do belive they offer a 4x4 in all trims. You must be referring to the Ranger. Too bad you cant get a regular cab 4x4 with a V6 in that.

"That would take away from F-150 sales", to paraphrase FoMoCo. I still think they have a screw loose to jettison their popular Ranger and think people will just buy different Ford products instead. They say it is an unprofitable segment- whose fault is that? If they can't make it work within their assumptions, maybe their assumptions are faulty. On the one hand, if a Ranger size pickup was offered alongside the F-150 and they were the exact same price, some people would still buy the smaller truck, and on the other hand, if there are less materials going into the truck it should be less expensive to make (labor might be about the same but save on materials), being lighter is wouldn't require as big an engine (presumably a cost savings), and therefore it should also be more fuel efficient- another attraction to customers. No doubt they won't sell as many Rangers as before, but they will keep the sales in house and make a profit as well.

Those of us who are interested in the Mahindra are an example of how the market here has been changing, but the manufacturers haven't recognized it yet.

Yes you are correct. I have been driving a 94 F150 for the past 7 or 8 years and when parked against a new F150 it looks small. If Ford would offer me a 4X4 long bed Ranger that gets 30+ MPG, I would already be driving it.
