My problem with the trucks being over $20k isn't so much the price but the fact that Americans- myself included- are going to be highly wary of these new trucks when they hit the road. Do you remember Daewoo? Remember how they were supposed to be the "Next Toyota" and had a suspension system supposedly designed by Lotus? Well they got here and the cars just fell apart. I had a friend who bought a new Daewoo sedan. The engine threw the rod through the engine after 3 months. By then the company had stopped selling in the US and he was screwed. The car was worthless.
That's my concern about these. They might be good. They might also be junk. I'm probably going to let others be the guinea pigs and try em' out first. But therein lies the problem: An untrusted, unknown brand needs to be cheap. Otherwise I could just go buy another small Tacoma for 15-16k that gets 25-27MPG and get another 250,000 miles out of one.
If given the choice of buying a Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Nissan, or a Mahindra all at the same price, I'm probably going to go with a well-known brand. But... if the Mahindra was 12-15k.... then now we're talkin' because that's a LOT cheaper and perhaps erases some of my fears of the truck turning out to be a dud.
