Default Crate Motors

I wonder if there are any plans to offer Mahindra crate motors to the public? I think that it would be a great idea as it looks like the motor would be a perfect size for a re-power of your trusted domestic midsize truck or suv. The possibilities would be endless. I know that I would sure be interested as I am always thinking about a vehicle that could be made better with diesel power. I had been waiting for the availability of the CRD motor that was available in the Jeep Liberty to come in a kit from Mopar Performance for the Wrangler and it never happened. I think that the aftermarket would take off with many different applications if the motor was available and reasonably priced.

jrel85, that would be great, and I could certainly see re-powering my old XJ with this as well. Several possible problems with this,

the first being that offering crate motors might cut into their new business (although I would think that this would be so minor in the scheme of things as to not be a problem, at least if they have any sales whatsoever).

the second, and possibly much more important issue, is the infrastructure necessary to push that business. Given progress to date , that might happen in 2025 By then we'll have in wheel electrical motors and we can re-power anything we wish .

The mHawk would be a great setup for my 99 Wrangler as well!

I agree with Lonnie, there are some issues, but they can be overcome. Another question is emissions. The 2.2 passes emission tests with the help of some exhaust "helpers". Would the USA/EPA allow the engine to be used a replacement w/o some of these "helpers"? I don't know. A replacement gasoline engine needs a catalytic converter in the exhaust system as well, but you can certainly buy new and rebuilt gas engines. Maybe one of the diesel experts could help.

Well I'm no expert, but in most states, RI included, the vehicle has to meet the emissions limits for whichever is newer. The body, or the engine. Engine bocks have ID numbers on them to identify the year of manufacture. There is a provision for true "replacement" engines, but there's paperwork involved of course.

I'm glad I don't live near you. That "garbage" is designed so that your vehicle doesn't poison you and those around you.

the main issues I see with those baby Cummins motors is the weight and size. That isn't going into an S-10 anytime soon. Even the half tons would have a lot of weight over the front end. It just seems really expensive to try and convert and up fit the suspension versus waiting for mahindra or just paying for gas. $5-7k buys a lot of gas.

I wonder how a VW 1.9 TDI would do in an S-10, if you could get it to adapt to the transmission. Might be a little underpowered.

I think it would be way underpowered. we are talkign abotu 100 hp and what 200 lbs of torque. that wouldn't haul or tow very much.

the 2.0 might but that again would be pricey
