I deceided to start a thread with all the info on the mHawk that we currently know so here goes:
  • 2.2 liters
  • all aluminum block
  • 140 hp with 236 lbs of torque
  • gear driven timing
  • T2B5 compliant......duh
  • 6 speed auto only
  • uses urea for the NOx scrubbing
  • roughly 30 MPG highway
  • 19 gallon fuel tank

What else do we know powertrain wise?

It hasn't passed EPA yet...

I've been working on an engine article for several months now. I suppose it's time I put it together. There is a lot of conflicting data that I have read through. One thing that is interesting from Mahindra's own 2009 press release on the 2.2 mHawk (launched in the domestic market Scorpio in March 2009) is that they describe the cam timing arrangement as "innovative 2-stage chain drive system". Conflicts with what was witnessed in India (pure gear driven).

I also have some info on the 1st gen mHawk (the 2.6L iron block) as well as the mEagle/mDI engines. All are based on the NEF CRDe architecture. I'll try to get it together soon. Some of the Indian press seems to make up some things so it's tough to sort through.

Y'all might want to wait a bit on the details, Chris. I had been searching desperately all over the web looking for 2.2 info. Even in the overseas reviews, engine details are about non-existent. wrt "innovative" timing chain arrangements, off hand, I could come up w/a couple thoughts on what that means, but they're all pretty goofy thoughts...

REAL diesels (read: Powerstrokes) use gear-drive!

Kind of annoying about the Indian press/blogs. They all tend to regurgitate press release info, and they don't seem to really care about the nuts and bolts. I think Americans want to know what's going on under the hood and where the pieces are sourced from. We really like to see engine cut-aways.

I've found a surprising amount of info on the first gen NEF engine (introduced in 2002) and the upgrades that made it the first mHawk (2005). Cast iron block and head, 2-valve, OHV design, etc.

The current 2.2L mHawk is definitely a nice evolution of the original slug. AVL designed the mechanical parts and Bosch developed/supplies the engine management system (ignition and fuel).

Some things are confusing. Many articles call CRDe, 'direct injection'. I've seen no real proof of this in the mHawk series. It is high pressure common rail fuel delivery but I see nothing that indicates the injectors are in the combustion chambers. More research...

Given that it's a diesel, I think it's pretty safe to say it's direct injected for emissions reasons.

They are. Well ok, I *think* they are. Common-rail just refers to the fuel delivery path. Allows all the injectors to have the fuel @ the same pressure. most diesels are direct injection. Even 'ol Blue.

Not to be an arse, but wouldn't it be good to cite some of this information? I appreciate your work on this compilation though!

Are there any photos of the engine?

One thing I've wondered- they always make the point that it doesn't have a timing belt, but they've never really said it's an overhead cam engine. It could be a conventional pushrod engine with a gear-driven cam, which wouldn't be anything unusual at all.

Given the RPM limits of most diesels, there really wouldn't be any downside to using pushrods apart from the extra parts involved.
