Default design to rebuild for motor or transmission?

Does anyone know what the "design to rebuild" is on their diesel motor or transmission?

Are you asking if they are disposable or not rebuildable? I know some manufacturers have gone that way intentionally or unintentionally. Honda 4x4 ATVs have a trans that is sealed and not rebuildable. If you trash it, you have to buy a new one. Interference engines are almost the same way these days. If you break a timing belt and smash valves into pistions, many times you are better off ($$$) buying a new longblock or used out of a wreck.

The VM 2.8L diesel in the Jeep Liberty, 05 and 06 for the US, has rocker arms designed to break if the timing belt breaks saving the rest of the engine. But being it's a 16 valve engine and parts are not cheap.....
