Question Slide-in camper on T20

Register to stop seeing this ad!

I'm looking into a slide-in camper for the T20.
The lack of an extended cab doesn't bother me.
The price of a new domestic truck and fuel mileage thereof does bother me.
I'm single and I want to retire and travel around the country on the cheap for a year or two. I need a 4x4 in order to boondock in the back country.
What do you think?

Hi Steve! Welcome to the site. Somewhere around here is a thread regarding one of our members wanting to build a camper on a TR40. It was an interesting discussion. If I find it I'll send u a pm.
Meantime, join the discussion! Hopefully we won't be waiting too much longer for some answers regarding the trucks...

cheers!

Steve, I'm the one trying to fit a camper on the tr40. Preliminary drawings are here.

With a tr20, it is even easier (I can't do a 20 because of the dog and friends)

I'm looking at a tray, and if I could do a tr20, then the
North Star Escape Pod would be my first choice. However, even with the bed on, there are scads of smaller campers available, and they would be awesome on a TR20. The load rating is extremely high on this truck.

I say go for it! Welcome to the forum!

Default NorthStar Escape Pod for Colorado will work

FYI, the link you posted with the Escape Pod shows a Colorado with a Ute Bed aluminum flatbed and a special Escape Pod sitting on it. That gives it a 6 foot wide floor and that Ute Bed is 6' x 7'6" wide. That same Ute Bed will fit the Mahindra. The Ute Bed, with drop sides included weighs about 300 lbs installed. The sides are removable for when you are camping, then you can put them back on to haul your toys and gear when the camper is not loaded.

Cheers,
UteMan

Good idea but watch out. The Mahindra sides are higher than most pickups so normal campers will not fit without some work. You might raise the bed a few inches, perhaps with foam board.

Now that you mention the fact about the sides being higher, I recall the roof is higher, too. Even with a utility bed you need to check the bed to roof top distance to be sure there is enough clearance for the camper you've got in mind.
