Default EPA for diesel & gas is tough because of CA, why must the whole country pay for..

Register to stop seeing this ad!

It is and will be challenging to meet Bin 8, EPA for diesel engines. Car Companies will have to use multiple catalyst stages, urea injection, etc.
Why the the whole North America rules being dictated by California problems???

I'm thinking it'd be a bit easier to simply push that bankrupt bunch of treehuggers into the ocean in order to feed the fish.
But somebody grab all of the old John Wayne and Steve McQueen movies first.

When I bought my Golf Tdi, it was not sold in California and New York.

Hey, you ought to try living here in California. It's such a beautiful state with so much to offer. However, the politics are maddening.....

Hopefully one day the EU and US can come up with a single plan along with India and China so it is one system to engineer with increasing returns to scale so costs drop across the board on emissions equipment.

This would be the smart way to do it but see the two statements above.

It's not only the emissions levels that would have to be agreed on, it's also the crash testing. As I understand it, the goals aren't even the same- in Europe they are much more concerned with the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists, while here it is all about occupant injury avoidance. Further, this model of Mahindra truck needed the bumper guard to protect the bumper (they really ought to call it the front fascia since it can't take a bump), while not required in markets like Australia. I'm sure car manufacturers would love to only have to deal with one set of rules, but I suppose it's a form of protectionism for home auto makers. It's got to end up costing us more money, though.

Oh for sure pee wee, I was only addressing the emissions. There are a slew of ther regs like the crash tests, bumper height and shape for pedestrians, noise, etc.

It's all great to poke fun at until it happens to YOU. Nothing turns around a person's attitude about emissions regulations quicker than choking on the smog in 1970's and 1980's San Francisco. Nothing turns around a person's attitude about crash testing than getting maimed in a head-on collision. You can shake your fist and say, "That will never be me!" but it usually turns around into, "There should be a law against this!" when it's you or your kid that's adversely effected.
