It ain't the auto makers fault why we don't have more diesel variety here.Blame goes squarely on the epa's shoulders. It's their dumbass regs that are killing off the reasons to own a diesel.I'm not even sure why they are really doing this in the first place. The govt wants better fleet mpg averages.Answer used to be introduce more diesel models.But....to bring the diesels into the "clean" zone the epa mandates, your losing the economy of owning a diesel.Add to that the outrageously high premiums the car companies are charging for the damn things, why even bother any more?I would love to see toyota and others bring in their well known small diesels.I'm betting that when they do,they won't be worth buying by the time they comply with whatever new diesel regs they will have to employ.

We had no diesels in anything but 3/4 ton or larger trucks before the EPA stepped in. (i know GM did with the ****ty 6.5 for a few years) either no consumers cared or the automakers didn't want to spend the R&D. I suspect it is a mix of both.

We haven't built a new oil refinery since the 70's so we can't produce more diesel even if demanded, that's why the price is so high right now and not making it economical to pay $9000 for a diesel.

The EPA and CAFE are the reason we'll get some lighter, more powerful and efficient trucks in the 2014-2015 time frame. Ford, GM, Chryco and all the others could care less about improving any of that stuff because sales show we'll just pay more for the biggest rig so why change the paradigm.

Your forgetting ford ranger diesels that were sold here, same same with vw back in the days. The problems with those were none of them were turbocharged ergo lacked power. They got great mpg though.BTW,I just heard my first report on the ford ecoboost v6 turbo in the f150's,a guy with 22k miles has had the turbos replaced by the factory.I guess they took a dump.Kinda kicks the propaganda clips on the ford website about the ecoboost right square in the a$$.I'm glad I have my chebby with the "old" technology.

I do realize that there were a good deal of cars with diesel (don't make me say Oldsmobile ) but in the truck world we have never really gotten them in anything other than 3/4 on up. Trucks are likely where they make the most sense but we are religated to only getting them in the overkill sizes.

Ford probably has the right approach for the US market with our cheap prices on gas and the power density and torque curves of boosted engines. They just need to turn up the juice and drop the displacement a bit.

The fault lye's on us for the idiots we vote for . The auto manufactures only take advantage of the epa rules to jack up the price. And we are all the monkey in the middle ...
