Default What do you guys think?

Register to stop seeing this ad!

I found a local 1991 D250 Dodge Ram with the 5.9 Cummins with 132k original miles and an auto tranny (i have no idea if it is interecooled or not, whether it is a 3 or 4 speed auto and beign a D and not W its a 2-wheel drive).

the truck looks excellent given its age (bright paint, clean inerior that is not faded or cracked, limited dings/dents etc)

He is asking $5k but everything I can read says $2000-3000 is fair. Do you guys think this is a good deal or not? I am thinking about trying to offer $2k to start just to gauge him.

IMHO you and he are too far apart on price to come to an agreement right now. He'll probably be so offended and insulted by an offer of 40% of asking price, and kick you to the door.

I can smell guys like this from miles away, and they rarely surprise me. His idea of "bottom line" is $4750. I'd put money on it.

I am going to go see it tonight and I'll try testing the waters by making him say a number first. best I can tell is that this is likely a 5-star or mint condition truck. It might be worth at least the $3k but I really don't want to pay more for a 20 year old truck

If you could get it for around $3k, that probably wouldn't be too bad! At 132k miles, it's barely broken in. My 2002 just passed 100k.

I was looking at that vintage Dodges prior to buying the Super Duty. The '9s I am certain are not factory intercooled so they are slower then the 92s and up which are. They are close to bullet proof but do tend to use-up injection pumps. Fortunately, parts are plentiful. Those trucks are also easy to convert to Bio if so inclined.
Our brethren are correct regarding price. $5k is too much unless it's showroom perfect. Definitely take a look and offer what u think is fair. Ya never know. But check EBAY. it's a good source to check avg prices.
Anyway, good luck and let us know how u do...

well I did take a look at the truck and it is in stellar condition. It looks like it is about 2 years old, not 20. The engine bay was "clean enough to eat off of" and everything was original from the paint to trim pieces.

I am still leery of the full $5k but it might just be worth $4k. And yes it is the intercooled model (1991.5 model with a 4 speed overdrive auto)

it is right inline for what I am looking for and really a few hundred dollars to maybe even a thousand isn't much money for something that was well taken care of. I do fully expect it to last me another 10 years

I do want to covert over to bio-diesel so I do appreciate any insight you might have.

Be careful with the automatic, my brother in law has one and the transmission had to be rebuilt at a hefty price. He loves the truck though, two wheel drives well.

Theres a good chance there may be transmition trouble if still stock but with a fue parts added they can become pretty bullet proof. And that will average 24+ mpg.

Rebuild the auto w/ the right parts (any good shop can do it) and she's bulletproof, just like the engine.
Bio is easy and safe on these trucks. The injection pumps and injectors can handle it pretty easy as long as it's well heated and filtered. Lot's of info on the 'net or can get a kit through geasecar.com or one of the others. An associate did a scratch-built on an old diesel Jetta a few years ago. WOrked great.

Dude, if the thing is really that good (check all the bed and cab mounting points to the frame), then buy it if u want it. It's a good truck and easy to convert if that's what u want...
