The Dakota failed (miserably) the side impact ratings. Air bags DIDN'T EVEN DEPLOY!!!! (Dodge blamed it on a computer error).
I second the motion. Go with the Taco or the Nissan. Every Dodge Dakota I've ever seen that's over 10+ years old usually has paint chipping off of it too. My dad LOVED his Dodge Cummins, but the inside of the thing was a sad, sad story. Radio wouldn't work, doors sagged, you name it. Great engine....but that's about it.
I love my Tundra though. Been a great truck. I drove a couple Taco's when I was looking a few years back & didn't like the ride quality. Too bouncy (I felt every bump & expansion joint on the freeway). The Tundra just sopped them up like butter.
But, mileage on the Tundra isn't much to write home about. I have a 2005 4x4 Quad Cab with all the bells & whistles and the best I've ever gotten out of it mileage wise was about 18 MPG. Yet another reason why I'd LOVE a Mahindra....if they ever materialize.
But man, be sure to drive the Taco & Nissan (and heck, drive a Ranger and a Colorado just for kicks; although the Colorado failed MISERABLY in the cab crush test done by the Insurance Safety Testing Institute (or whatever they call it).
